The centre has a current catchment area of 312,840 persons, and annual turnover at the centre for 2006 was NZ$175.8 m with 7.5 million visitors per year. It employs around 1,460 staff as of late 2007.〔〔 == History and development == Westfield Manukau City was not always part of the Westfield Portfolio. Originally opened in 1976, it was fully acquired by the Westfield Group in 2001.〔 The centre was redeveloped in 1986 and 1992, by then owners National Mutual and Fletcher Challenge.〔 After taking partial ownership in 1998, further redevelopments were instigated in 2003 by Westfield, adding additional speciality outlets as well as enabling upgrades to an existing supermarket within the centre.〔〔(Westfield Completes Manukau City Development (Westfield Press Release) ) - ''Scoop'', Friday 30 November 2007〕 Further redevelopments were undertaken in 2007.〔 The expansions are valued at $70 m NZD (2007) and include a new mall with 35 additional speciality stores, and a Skycity cinema.〔 The expansions were finished in late 2007, with the exception of the cinema which opened in September 2008. The cinema contains 1,932 seats over three levels with 10 screens and employs around 70 staff. The cinemas are leased to SkyCity for an initial 10-year duration. In a 2008 rating of New Zealand shopping centres by a retail expert group, Westfield Manukau City received three-and-a-half out of four stars, based on the criteria of amount of shopping area, economic performance, amenity and appeal as well as future growth prospects.
